Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Start thinking about your brain health. January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Canada. Researchers estimate that nearly 1 million people in Canada will be living with dementia by 2030, with the most common cause being Alzheimer’s disease (alzheimer.ca). Alzheimer’s disease causes the brain to shrink, leading to a gradual decline in memory, thinking, behaviour and social skills.

While there is no cure for most types of dementia, proactive steps can be taken to reduce the risk of developing dementia, including:

  1. Stay socially active and challenge your thinking

Engage with friends and family and stay connected with your social network. Take on mental leisure activities and make an effort to try and learn new things.

  2. Adopt healthy behaviours

Physical activity, healthy food choices and avoiding stress greatly benefit your overall health and your quality of life.

  3. Take care of your overall health

See a doctor regularly and manage your medical conditions. Taking care of your overall health positively impacts your brain as well as your body.

A WELL Precision Assessment gives you a detailed look at your body’s current functioning and can detect early-stage abnormalities, like changes to the brain caused by Alzheimer’s disease, allowing timely intervention and more effective treatment outcomes.
